Battery vs diesel: the real cost of every backup hour

Most facilities that need backup power default to diesel, because that's what backup has always meant. But the true cost of a generator isn't the sticker price — it's every hour it runs afterward, in fuel, maintenance and the seconds of downtime before it starts.

The response gap

A diesel generator needs 30–60 seconds to start and transfer load once the grid fails. A battery system takes over in under 20 milliseconds — fast enough that sensitive equipment never notices the switch. For production lines, cold chains and IT infrastructure, that gap is the difference between a non-event and a costly restart.

What each hour actually costs

Diesel carries a recurring fuel cost every time it runs, plus regular maintenance for an engine with many moving parts, plus direct emissions at the site. A battery system draws down stored charge instead — no fuel cost during discharge, fewer moving parts to service, and no emissions while operating.
